The Outer Banks of North Carolina have offered vacationers and residents alike a wonderland of rolling sand dunes and ocean breezes for hundreds of years. Though the narrow strand of sand running along the northern coast of North Carolina may seem small and insignificant, it has hosted settlers, inventors, soldiers, and tourists throughout its history. Today, the Outer Banks continue to provide a relaxed and beautiful atmosphere for all those who walk along their beaches.
For such a relatively small land area, the Outer Banks are full of wildlife refuges, sheltered seashores, forests, shifting sand dunes, and resort communities. The history of the islands is legendary and the present maintains a timeless feel. Indeed, the first English individuals to attempt to settle the future United States did so right here on Roanoke Island.
The Outer Banks Ocean Breezes
Though the islands offer more than just beaches, the biggest attraction will always be the miles of coastline. With nine hundred square miles of ocean surrounding these barrier islands, the opportunity for fun in the surf is great. From surfing, to sea kayaking, to fishing, nearly everyone can find something that suits their needs.
However, for those who just wish to take it easy during their vacation, the lazy afternoon and extraordinary sunsets are the perfect setting. Suits and ties are virtually non-existent, and sandals and shorts are recommended for even the nicest restaurants. The only rule on the islands is to relax and enjoy the pace.
