Nags Head

Nags Head is the Outer Banks original tourist haven and is located just south of Kill Devil Hill. For more than 150 years it has remained among the most popular of tourist destinations on the eastern seaboard. For many years, most people referred to the entire mid-Outer Banks area as Nags Head simply because it was the only real destination there was in the area.

The tourist trade began modestly as a few simple cottages facing the sound and grew to include several elaborate hotels. The pace of the area has remained unchanged, however, and the relaxed atmosphere of the area still is as constant as the surf. Today, the town is home to nearly three thousand permanent residents and a thriving tourist economy.

Nags Head Today
Most residents of Nags Head live in the middle or western side of the island away from the often-violent sea. Apparently, most have seen enough hurricanes up-close-and-personal! The ocean-side of the island is where most of the vacation homes remain and is populated mostly by itinerant guests.

Probably the most popular attraction in the town is Jockey's Ridge State Park on the south end of town. This park is world-renowned for hang-gliding, kite flying, and the amazing sunset views. The centerpiece of the park is the largest sand dune on the east coast.
