Nags Head Vacations

Nags Head vacations are the perfect escape for individual adventurers, honeymooning couples, or the whole family. With Nags Head vacations, the opportunity for a plethora of activities allows anyone to find their niche and enjoy their stay. Being the oldest vacation destination in the Outer Banks, Nags Head long ago established itself as prime location for fun in the sun.

The story of Nags Head is an interesting one and began long before the first European settlers began populating the area. In 1738, the town was officially named "Nags Head" and began appearing on maps as such. Though historians state that the name referenced the wild horses that roamed the islands, the locals spin a more colorful yarn about their little town's odd name.

Vacations in the Oldest Resort in the Outer Banks
The legend of Nags Head, as told by the locals, states that the town's name references the shady past of some past residents. In the early days of the island, these settlers would affix a lantern to a horse's neck and walk the animal up and down the beach at night. The swinging of the lantern resembled the swinging of a lantern on a sailboat.

Unknowing vessels off the coast would see this lantern and wrongly assuming it was another boat, steer towards it. Unfortunately as they approached the "boat" they would run aground on the shoals off the coast and become hopelessly stuck. The dubious locals would promptly ransack the boat and make off with any valuable they could steal. Thus, the first Nags Head vacations were less than planned!
