Kitty Hawk, North Carolina

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, is best known for its contribution to the history of manned flight. You might recognize the name Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as the place where the Wright Brothers first successfully piloted their "flying machine." A trip down Kitty Hawk Road will lead you to the monument commemorating the spot where Wilbur and Orville assembled the plane that first succeeded in flight!

In actuality however, the Wright brothers did not actually fly in Kitty Hawk at all--they only assembled their plane here. The first flight actually took place a few miles down the road at Kill Devil Hills. You'd think the brothers could have chosen a more hospitably named location for making history!

Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, and Its Hospitable People
Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, was mainly a fishing and farming village for most of its early history. Unlike other vacation destinations such as Nag's Head that have hosted tourists for over one hundred years, Kitty Hawk is a relatively new addition to tourism. Indeed, Kitty Hawk did not become a true vacation retreat until the 1920s.

It was then that a group of businessmen bought seven miles of beach around the Kitty Hawk area and formed the Wright Memorial Bridge Company. During the 1930s, a new bridge connecting Kitty Hawk to the mainland allowed tourists to flock to the new vacation resort. Over the years, cottages sprang up all along the beachfront and were regularly filled with happy vacationers.
