Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Travel Tips for Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is located on the United States and Canadian border. It is often referred to as one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The area is a popular destination for both honeymooners and families.

Geography

When people refer to Niagara Falls, they are actually referring to a collection of three falls. The Horseshoe Falls is located on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls and is over 2,600 feet wide and 170 feet high. On the American side is the American and Bridal Veil Falls.

Facts

The Horseshoe Falls pump out over 600,000 gallons per second. On the other side of the border, the Bridal Veil and American falls pump out 150,000 gallons per second. The falls on the American side pump less water because the water flow is obstructed by Goat Island. The water that flows out of Niagara Falls goes into the Great Lakes, which supply over 20 percent of the world’s freshwater.

Considerations

Since both sides of Niagara Falls offer different views and attractions, many visitors visit both the Canadian side and the American side. The Rainbow Bridge connects the two cities. You can cross the bridge on a bike, on foot or in a car. Since the bridge connects the United States and Canada, you will need to present proper documentation to cross the border. Currently, U.S. and Canadian citizens do not need a passport to cross the border. However, you must have your birth certificate.

Benefits

Features

One of the best ways to see the beauty and power of Niagara Falls is to take a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist. The boat ride lasts 20 minutes and takes you as close to the falls as possible without getting in the water. Because you will get wet on the boat ride, you are given a disposable poncho when you board. You can board the Maid of the Mist from either the Canadian or American sides of the fall. The Canadian dock is located at the foot of Clifton Hill; the American dock is located at the entrance to the observation tower. The boat ride typically operates from April to October. Check the website for operating times and admission prices. Another popular way to view the falls is to go on the Journey Behind the Falls. During the 35- to 45-minute experience, you take an elevator 150 feet down and can see the falls crashing down from above (see Resources below). Note there are also many other tourist attractions, such as the IMAX theatre and Marineland.
