Wisconsin Tourism

A large part of Wisconsin tourism revolves around Door County. The county got its unusual name because of how treacherous it is for ships to pass through the area--it was known by the French and Indians as "death's door passage." The rough colonial days are long gone, and today Door County is home to several quiet fishing villages with quaint names like Egg Harbor, Sister Bay, and Sturgeon Bay.

With over 300 miles of scenic shoreline and nearly 30 public beaches, Door County brings many people to the area. The beaches on the lake provide entertainment for young ones and relaxation for adults. Popular outings include long walks on the beaches during sunsets and during the moonlit hours.

Wisconsin Lighthouses
Door County is a great place to visit if you enjoy lighthouses. Many people enjoy painting or photographing lighthouses, and if that sounds like you, you'll have your pick of nine of them in the area. Take, for example, the Cana Island lighthouse. It's still actively operating. It dates all the way back to the 1860s, although it has since been mechanized. It's still a beautiful and recognizable landmark for people in the area.

All lighthouses in the area have been automated, but you can still get up close and person with several of them. The easiest to access is probably the Eagle Bluff lighthouse, which has been restored and turned into a museum. Some of the lighthouses are only open during certain weekends of the year that are associated with special festival days. Eagle Bluff is open weekends during the summer and early fall, which is why it's your best bet.
