Don't worry if you've got two left feet, you'll be surprised at how easy it is to pick up the basic moves. So put on your dancing shoes and get on the floor!

Square Dancing--An American Tradition
Square dancing is truly an American institution, with its roots traceable back to the pioneers who helped build our nation. Though it's changed a lot throughout the years, it's remained remarkably true to the dances the pioneer men and women enjoyed. Our forefathers definitely knew how to get down when the day was done. Get out there and party like it's 1799!

One of the unique trademarks of square dancing is the caller. The caller's job is to shout out the dance cues, letting the participants know which moves are coming next. Traditionally, the caller has an exuberant, outgoing personality. The caller is essentially the square dancing's "master of ceremonies," shouting out the cues with style and panache.

The most famous caller's cue is the familiar call "dosado." Even those who've never tried square dancing will recognize the call. A dosado is when a dancer, facing another dancer, literally dances a circle around the other without turning. The dancer then returns to the starting position and awaits the next call.
