Egg Harbor resorts offer a great location from which to plan a vacation full of outdoor adventure. Anglers and golfers will be happy, as will hikers. If low-impact hiking is your style, there are plenty of self-guided nature trails to wander along, taking photos or sketching wildflowers along the way. For hard-core hikers, you've got five state parks and even more county parks from which to choose.
If you want to hike in Door County, try to visit during the summer. The weather is the most temperate then, with shorts and t-shirts being appropriate for daytime wear. At night, temperatures can dip, so you'll need to bring long pants and a medium-weight jacket. If you arrive during the fall, you'll still have the opportunity for some great hiking and you'll have the added bonus of the glorious fall foliage. Weather could get a bit chilly, though, so bring long-sleeved shirts and a warm jacket.
More Hiking Trails in Door County
There are plenty of county and regional parks in Door County where hikers can exercise and roam. Of particular interest is Whitefish Dunes park, where you have over 10 miles of trails that run past replicas of Native American dwellings. If that sounds too tame for you, check out Newport park, which is a bit more rugged. It's more wilderness than tamed landscape and is perfect for those who want to be out and about all day or for those who like to camp.
There are plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing in the area, too. Toft's Point contains quite a few rare plants, which you can photograph or sketch. Check out marine life on Rock Island (you need to take a ferry to get there). These locations are great during spring and summer, before it gets too cold. Once the snow starts falling in the late fall and early winter, it's best to stick with skiing or snowmobiling.
