I was very pleased with my trip to Playa del Carmen. It offered everything I was looking for on this vacation. The people were friendly, the hotels were fantastic, and you can choose any type of restaurant you could think of, from local bars, to cafes, to gourmet food. In addition, there is always nightly entertainment.
Activities include diving (there are plenty of dive shops where you can rent equipment). There are many types of dives and each meets the individual divers' needs. They cater to both experts and beginners. Swimming at the beaches is a pleasure. I found the sand to be clean and the water clear.
Playa del Carmen Trips
I especially enjoyed several day trips I took. I went to Puerto Morelos, which is 20 miles away. They have spectacular botanical gardens, and I even visited the Crocodile Farm. I found Xcaret to be extremely interesting. This site features cenotes (sort of an underground peninsula covered with limestone).
One day I took at bus tour from Playa del Carmen to see the Mayan ruins in Tulum and Chichen-Itza. At Chichen-Itza, the largest pyramid is 25 meters high. There is an observatory, named El Caracol that has a spiraling staircase. On the way back we stopped at the town of Valladolid known for its food and stopped at a local restaurant, then visited another cenotes located nearby.
