Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is a tiny island eight miles across the Bahia de Mujeres (Bay of Women) from Cancun. Although it is only five miles long and one half mile wide, Isla Mujeres offers a lot to its visitors. Once home only to a fishing village, Isla Mujeres is now sought out by those looking for a relaxing vacation atmosphere, away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun.
What to Do and Where to Stay on Isla Mujeres
Although it is small, Isla Mujeres offers plenty of places to stay; accommodations range from five star resorts to simple bed and breakfasts. Most of the more reasonably priced hotels are located in Centro (Downtown) Isla Mujeres. Although they are inexpensive they are for the most part clean and comfortable and offer guests access to downtown restaurants and shops.
The more luxurious hotels and resorts are located along the beachfront, and the island is dotted with private rental homes. These accommodations offer easy access to the water; snorkeling, swimming, dolphin swims and fishing charters are all popular activities on Isla Mujeres.
If you decide to spend a day on dry land there's still plenty to do; Isla Mujeres boasts Mayan ruins, a turtle farm, cultural museum, historic lighthouse, and shops selling local Mexican arts and crafts. In addition, there are many places on the island renting bicycles and mopeds which are easy and enjoyable ways to see the sights.
