While many know Cancun Mexico as one of the world's premier resorts, few know that this Cancun has only been in existence for a few decades. For many years the Mexican State Quintana Roo, of which Cancun is a part, was a desolate backwater inhabited by a small population of the descendants of Mayan Indians. In the early 1960s the Mexican government began a national search for a new resort area and Cancun was the obvious choice; development soon began to turn the island into a tropical paradise
A Short History of Cancun Mexico
The history of Cancun Mexico begins many years before its selection as a resort location, around the year 1000 A.D. It was around this time that Mayan civilization on the Mexican mainland began to crumble due to drought, famine, and political strife. Many moved to the Yucatan, and to the island that is Cancun today, in order to start anew. Today the descendants of the Mayans still live in and around Cancun and the ruins of their great cities still dot its landscape.
After connecting the island of Cancun to the rest of the Yucatan with bridges, draining many acres of mangrove swamp and putting in a network of roads, Cancun was ready for business. The resort Cancun Mexico opened for the first time in 1974; the island had been transformed from a rural backwater to an instant vacation hotspot. Billed by the Mexican government as a "tropical paradise," today Cancun accounts for a full 35 percent of Mexico's tourism income.
Because it is such a popular vacation spot, Cancun has a lot to offer a diverse range of individuals. Many people go to Cancun to relax on its white sand beaches; others go to visit the Mayan ruins, experience a taste of traditional Mexican culture, enjoy a variety of water sports, or be pampered in an exclusive spa. In addition to many activities and excursions, Cancun Mexico offers a wide variety of accommodations and activities to match its diverse clientele.
