There are many different Cancun excursions available, enough to satisfy all types of vacationers. Not only is Cancun a tropical paradise, it also boasts both cultural and ecological treasures. Cancun offers excursions that are relaxing, educational, and adventurous, and because the island is so geared toward tourism, it's possible to roll all three into one vacation.
Types of Cancun Excursions Available
One of the best relaxing Cancun excursions is a short cruise to Isla Mujeres (Isle of Women). Isla Mujeres offers the same sandy beaches and clear blue water as Cancun, but it is less crowded and has a more laid back atmosphere. On Isla Mujeres you can tour quaint fishing villages, take scenic walks, snorkel in the calm waters of a lagoon, or simply relax on the beach with a drink in your hand.
If you are looking for more adventurous Cancun excursions, you might want to consider cavern diving. Most of these caverns are located along the Yucatan coastline. The entire peninsula is a porous limestone shelf; rainwater seeps through the limestone, weakening it and causing sinkholes that are open to the surface. These sinkholes eventually fill with water and because they are separated from the ocean they are always calm and clear, offering spectacular views of underwater mineral deposits.
There are also Cancun excursions tailored specifically to the eco-tourist. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, located 80 miles south of Cancun, is a spectacular 1.3 million acre parcel of land set aside by the Mexican government to preserve the original ecosystems of the Yucatan. The Sian Ka'an contains several different types of ecosystems, including tropical forest, savanna, mangrove swamp, and coral reefs, as well as abundant wildlife. There is transport directly from Cancun, and once there visitors can enjoy the reserve on foot or by kayak.
