Minnesota History in Brief
For much of its early history Minnesota was sparsely populated by the Dakota and Ojibwa Indian tribes and a few European fur trappers and settlers. 1853, however, saw the beginning of a huge population explosion, from 40,000 to 150,000 in just three years. In 1858, Minnesota became the 32nd state in the union, its economy dependent mainly on farming and iron mining.
Despite a bloody uprising by the Dakota tribe, brought on by a string of broken treaties, the population of settlers continued to grow. The late 1800s saw a marked increase in industrialization and agriculture, as well as the development of Minneapolis and St. Paul as major urban centers. Today, the Twin Cities are widely recognized as major cultural centers, and Minnesota continues to produce a large percentage of the nation's food.
