No trip to the Southwest is complete without a visit to Arizona. I say this having traveled everywhere in southern Utah, Nevada, southeastern California, and New Mexico. While all of those places have something uniquely special to offer, none of those states can match the diversity or exotic scenery of Arizona.
The Grand Canyon is the most obvious tourist destination. It’s the one place in the Southwest where you’re most likely to see hundreds of tourists in crowds. But actually there are so many hidden treasures that offer as much serenity and eye candy.
The Other Arizona
Whether you’re interested in finally visiting the Grand Canyon or looking for night life in Phoenix, Arizona offers something for everyone. At 7,000 feet Flagstaff offers a high desert terrain with moderate summers by Arizona standards. (Actually 95 degrees of dry heat is equivalent to 80 Back East.) The terrain is scattered with alpine forests and pines. During winter the region gets a bearable amount of snowfall without the unbearable temperatures.
Just below Flagstaff, and 50 minutes from Phoenix, is the sleepy town of Sedona. Actually it’s not so sleepy anymore. Most people come back from Sedona with high praise for its unique ecosystem of ancient red rock structures, wildlife, and towering waterfalls--not to mention the numerous “vortex” formations with apparent “healing powers.”
