Travel in Italy for a taste of what the ancient world had to offer. Italy itself, while a modern nation in every way, holds a deep respect for its past and has preserved much of its art and architecture for the world to see. If you travel in Italy you will see their reverence for the history and legacy they carry into the future.
Italy once was a land dominated by several distinctly different cultures. The tribes that occupied the land did not have much contact at first, although the Latins, Etruscans and Romans eventually began to encroach upon one another as their societies increased. When the city of Rome, once occupying only the Palatine Hill, expanded and forced the issue with its neighbors, the strength of the Roman will as well as their highly defensible land made them unstoppable.
The Roman Empire lasted for over a thousand years, although it would take on a much different iteration later in its history. After Constantine moved the capital to modern day Istanbul, Rome itself became the cultural and spiritual capital of the empire, but little more. It would be sacked first by the Vandals, then by then Huns several centuries later. Many other Italian cities like Milan, Turin, and Florence would also be razed by northern barbarians.
Travel in Italy to View the Past
While many structures have long since been destroyed either by modern war or ancient brigandry, you can still see the landscape dotted with the ruins of what was once the greatest civilization the world has ever seen. Every Italian city has a story to offer tourists and historians. While western civilization might have originated with the Greeks, it was the Romans who spread it throughout Europe and the known world.
