About Rome, Italy

Overview

Rome, the capital city of Italy, is one of the world's most popular travel destinations. Each year, travelers from all walks of life flock to Rome's historic sites in order to walk in the footsteps of citizens across the ages. Also known as "La Citta Eterna," or The Eternal City, Rome offers an abundance of art, food, history, fashion, and entertainment for travelers of all ages.

History

Although the exact year in which Rome was founded is debated among historians, it is generally agreed to be between 750 BC and 650 BC. After a brief ruling period presided over by a line of kings, Rome became a republic around 500 BC. The Roman Empire grew to great power, rising to a pinnacle with the rule of Augustus, whose reign ushered in a long period of peace. The legendary fall of Rome occurred around the third century, spurred by the rise of Christianity and a combination of financial and military troubles. In the following centuries, Rome rose from the ashes of its decay through the Middle Ages into the Renaissance, and into its current status as an amalgamation of history and modern culture.

Significance

At the height of its power, Rome was the center of trade and civilization in Europe. Romans were famous for their engineering and building techniques; they made widespread use of aqueducts, arches, and roads. The saying "all roads lead to Rome" refers to the widespread Roman network of roads, which extended approximately 50,000 miles and allowed Romans to spread their influence. Rome was a major center of commerce, politics, and military strength. Today, Rome is considered a major center of art, culture and Catholicism.

Features

Rome's most notable features are historical buildings and sites, among them the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Catacombs and Circus Maximus. Relgious centers include Vatican City, St. Peter's Cathedral and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Rome is also known for its abundance of great art, including the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museum and Michelangelo's Pieta in St. Peter's Cathedral.

Size

Rome is a fairly small city, and easily walkable. The majority of historic sites are spread within a small area, and an effective public transportation network connects the farthest points of interest. The outskirts of Rome spread for miles into the Italian countryside until they reach the sea to the west and the hills to the west.
