Pets Allowed

Finding a hotel that allows pets is much easier than it used to be. As recently as 10 years ago, travelling with a dog or cat could be pretty inconvenient. One had to either camp out or leave the poor animal in the car overnight while the family slept in a hotel or motel room. But as the popularity of owning pets has grown, the travel industry has expanded to include more and more hotels and motels that allow pets.

I've taken a couple of trips with my dog and found that booking ahead in a pet-friendly motel is much easier than trying to find a room at the last minute. Without a pre-booked room, the process of finding a motel that allows dogs goes something like this: drive into a highway town, choose a motel at random, park, approach the front desk and ask if they have any rooms available, what the price is, and if they allow pets. Repeating this process four or five times in the middle of the night after a long day's drive can be pretty discouraging.

Two Magic Words: "Pets Allowed"
Once I found a motel that said the magic words, "Yes, we allow pets," I usually had to pay a pet surcharge of anywhere from $10 to $20. Reducing or even eliminating the pet surcharge is one of the many advantages of booking ahead in a pet-friendly hotel or motel. Just as with all travel arrangements nowadays, the Internet makes finding pet-friendly hotels and motels very easy.

Saving money isn't the only advantage to booking a room in a pet-friendly hotel in advance. As much as we humans can get frustrated with a long day spent in the car or on a plane, pets suffer even more. Travel can place quite a bit of stress on a dog or cat, so the sooner one can check into a safe, quite room, the better. Many dogs are easily distracted by the sounds of other people in a hotel or motel, so taking one's dog for a long walk before bed can help ensure a good night's sleep for everyone.
