Monterey is quite an old town, located in California and having been found by Spaniards in 1602. History is still found everywhere in Monterey including buildings that are in the colonial style as well as the popular waterfront where most of the action is found. In the Monterey State Historic Park there are as many as 37 places to visit, but it is usually imperative to be on the walking tour in order to get the full experience.
Outdoor types will love Monterey since there are bike paths that surround the city. John Steinbeck made the area popular with his book Cannery Row, which was the area where the fish canneries were located in Monterey. The area is no longer a place for canning fish and is now a tourist attraction with places to eat, shop, and dance at night.
The Best Thing about Monterey
The best thing to do in Monterey is definitely visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is rumored to have the largest underwater life displays in the world and when you visit, you will see why. There is also the ever-popular pool where children and adults can touch the bat rays, an experience not soon forgotten.
Museums are also popular in Monterey and many of the old houses such as the Larkin House or the Stevenson House are museums in their own right. The Stevenson house is actually named after Robert Louis Stevenson who came through the area in the late 1800s. Monterey is right on the water, but it really does have reason to boast much more than the typical wharfs and tacky tourist attractions.
