Located on the northeast shores of Florida near the Georgia border, Jacksonville, Florida is the largest city in the country. At 756 square miles, it is more than twice the size of New York--yet it only ranks 14th in population. Jacksonville offers an array of obvious attractions for family vacations such as fantastic seafood and beaches, fishing, and golf.
Some good Jacksonville travel deals can be found with a little online scouting and patience. Not the cheapest place in Florida, hotel and motel prices can range from $65 to above $100, although the prices can vary from season to season. A July trip will cost less than a January trip, and unless you're in college, you might want to avoid the spring break season.
The Most Popular Attractions
There are several family-friendly attractions such as the Jacksonville Zoo and the Museum of Science & History. Tourist-friendly Jacksonville Landing has shops, good restaurants and entertainment near the water. If you're a gambling type, you'll find riverboat casinos about a half hour's drive from downtown and greyhound racing at the Jacksonville Kennel Club. Southbank, across the river, has good bars and beautiful views of downtown. Atlantic Beach and Jacksonville Beach are two more great night spots.Â
There are plenty of beaches in Jacksonville, and when you've had enough sun and sand, the downtown and waterfront areas have restaurants and shops galore, all reachable by water taxi. If you're planning on going to the beaches or riverboat gambling, you should rent a car--other than downtown-based water taxis, public transportation isn't widely used here. You'll find Jacksonville a vibrant, friendly place with lot of leisure activities to keep you relaxed and happy.
