Indianapolis, Indiana is known primarily for being home to the Indy 500, the world's most famous car racing event. This is a compact city, with the airport located only ten miles from downtown. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway located just a few miles west of downtown.
This is a good city for sporting and betting types. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum is west of downtown at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. And, if you've got a rental car, Hoosier Park (about 30 miles northeast) offers live harness and thoroughred horseracing. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.Â
Indianapolis Nightlife
Lockerbie Square and Fountain Square, close to the downtown region, offer a decent local scene and nightlife. If you plan on being out a lot, you will probably be best served by renting a car. Indianapolis has decent bus service, but no trains or subway service, and the winter months are not particularly kind to those who are stranded outdoors.
As far as staying in Indianapolis, rates can depend on the time of the year. Hotels and motels may shoot their rates up during the Indy 500, but the good news is that the cost of living is relatively low in Indiana, so the cost of lodging, entertainment and food shouldn't ever be a king's ransom. Indianapolis's proximity to many Midwest towns makes it a great local trip destination and business meeting center. Hotel prices are very reasonable, as are food and drinks at most places. Whether you're in town for business or pleasure, you'll probably find Indianapolis to be a very low-key, pleasant place to spend some time.
