The types of hotels that allow pets run the gamut from large, luxury suites to small, economy lodgings. Pet friendly hotels can be found in just about every state in the country, from California to Florida. Before taking a trip, it's a good idea to make reservations at a hotel that allows pets in whichever city or cities one will be visiting. Trying to find a pet friendly hotel at the last minute can result in stressed-out owners and pets, as well as higher room fees.
Vacationers are not the only people who can benefit from online listings of hotels that allow pets. Sometimes people find themselves relocating to a new city on short notice and they need temporary lodgings for themselves and their beloved pets. Online listings include hotels and motels that rent rooms by the week, so that those who require longer stays can enjoy lower rates. Suites with amenities like modem jacks, kitchenettes, and cable TV are the kind of accommodations preferred by many transplanted owners (and their pets).
What to Expect on Arrival
Before the first time I took my dog on the road with me, I had certain expectations of how he would react to the car ride and motel lodging. I thought that if he got plenty of exercise he would be relaxed during the driving portions of our trip and comfortable once we were inside our motel room. The fact is, animals are very sensitive to their surroundings and prefer to keep a regular routine. Don't be discouraged if your pet isn't his normal self for part or all of your trip.
My dog had a diminished appetite and reluctance to "do his business" while in unfamiliar surroundings. He was very excited once we checked into our room: he ran around sniffing everything and kept jumping on and off the bed. Instead of getting worked up myself, I remained calm and let him check everything out. Our pets take their cues from us in many instances, so my relaxed demeanor was the best tool I had for communicating a sense of safety to my dog. A little patience goes a long way towards making the most of a trip with one's pet.
