Honolulu is one of the most popular destinations in the United States because it is exotic and US citizens do not need a passport to go there. (Its natural beauty and unique culture are also probable reasons for its allure.) Honolulu is also one of the only places in the US that tourists cannot drive to and that probably also holds a certain attraction. Honolulu is home to one of the busiest airports in the US in terms of the amount of traffic compared to the square mileage of the state.
Honolulu International Airport (HNL) is the life-blood of Hawaii's capital for a number of different reasons. Hawaii could hardly support the number of residents it has and the number of tourists that visit with its own resources. Hawaii is almost totally dependent on air freight for most of the resources that support its economy. Hawaii's economy also relies heavily on tourists who could not get there without sufficient air travel capacity.
Honolulu has many first-rate resorts and hotels from which travelers can choose. Such accommodations can be very expensive, however. Hawaiian hotels have relatively high overhead costs because of the expense of shipping everything in by plane. Also, Hawaiian real estate is not cheap because it is so limited. This also means there is not much space for parking lots, but fortunately, there are few tourists who bring their cars with them. For residents who travel, however, park, sleep, and fly services are often the best route to take.
Getting around in Hawaii
Non-residents who wish to drive must rent cars or take taxis and shuttles wherever they want to go. As with many, other, tropical island destinations, visitors can rent scooters and motorcycles instead of cars. (Gas is very expensive on most islands, and the islands of Hawaii are no exceptions.) Traveling from island to island can be done either by boat or by plane. However, many tourists spend their entire vacations without ever leaving the confines of their beach-front resorts.
