In my college years, I drove from Chicago to Milwaukee every weekend to see my boyfriend. One day, we had a fight and I needed a long drive to calm down. Instead of going back to Chicago, I decided to keep driving north, and about 100 miles later, I ended up in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Nothing cures a foul mood like a new atmosphere, so I decided to stay the night in the Midwest's oldest settlement and see a little bit of the place. I'm glad I did: I found the people to be extraordinarily warm, and I was soon out of my little funk. Wisconsin residents are the friendliest people you'll ever meet. I defy you to meet and dislike a Wisconsin-bred person.
I'd never thought much about the city except as home to the Green Bay Packers, and had assumed that all society within the city revolved around the football team. There is, after all, a Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame there. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the city isn't defined by sports. Of course, I wasn't there during football season; things might have been different a bit later in the year.
What's Nice about Wisconsin
A major plus to Green Bay is its low cost of living. This means you can treat yourself without too much pain in the pocketbook. And while I may have been in my own personal Heartbreak Hotel that day (cost: free!), prices for hotels and motels here go between $50 to $85 a night, and food and entertainment are also reasonable. It turns out that bratwurst, cheese and beer are equal to ice cream in terms of good romantic-crisis-comfort-food. Green Bay will always have a place in my heart as the place that cheered me up in my time of need, but I highly recommend it even to those in a positive state of mind.
