Taking a ranch vacation is a wonderful experience. Whether you have been riding horses all your life or have just decided to learn, nothing can beat the equestrian education gained by spending a week or so at a ranch. To help you understand what a ranch trip is like as well as to encourage you to choose the right ranch for your trip, I encourage you to read the following information.
Taking a Ranch Vacation:
In previous pages we have discussed the basics of distinguishing between a good ranch and poor one. Continuing with this topic a bit further I would like to encourage anyone planning a ranch trip to first inquire as to how many horses will be assigned each rider. Since ranch duties are extensive and require a lot of horse work, participants in a ranch trip should be assigned at least three horses to ride during their stay. If you come across a ranch that only provides one horse per rider for all the duties, I suggest that you pass. Ranch work is hard and horses need rest too!
As far as the rider responsibilities assigned during such a vacation, they vary depending on the type of trip. More adventurous participants can expect twelve hour days filled with overnight horseback camping trips, tack and riding lessons, trail rides, and even cattle drives (as in helping the ranch hands move cattle across the plains on horseback). Of course, riders can always choose to take a more conservative ranch trip . . . but what fun would that be?
Ranch vacations are an excellent way to revitalize and experience life in an entirely new way.
