Centered riding is as much a way of life as it is a style of riding. A method that encourages riders to find their own centers of balance in order to communicate more effectively with their horses, the centered style of riding is considered by many experts to be the foundation of all other types of riding. For more information on riding centered, please read on.
The Benefits of Centered Riding:
Often described as the Tai Chi of horseback riding, the Centered style is a very organic method that places primary focus on the rider's center of gravity. In general, the more centered a rider is in his/her saddle, the easier the ride. With this in mind, centered style instructors put their students through a variety of exercises to get them balanced in the saddle and comfortable on the horse.
One of the more challenging exercises in the Centered style is one in which the horse is put on a lead line, while the rider is blindfolded and asked to keep his/her hands off the reins and out to the side. While the horse trots in a circle on the instructors lead, riders are forced to find their own balance. While this might seem an impossible task, after a few minutes of this exercise, riders truly begin to understand the essence of balanced riding.
If you are at all interested in learning how to become a confident balanced rider, I strongly recommend that you take a few lessons in centered riding.
