When planning your trip to Hawaii, it is important to decide what time of year you want to visit. Since the air and water temperatures are relatively consistent through the year, you can have an enjoyable vacation any time of year. However, certain activities, such as whale watching and surfing, are only available at certain times the year.
1. Decide which island you want to visit. There are 8 major islands in the Hawaiian chain, but 2 are not accessible to the public. The island of Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai each have unique attractions and scenery. If you are going to visit Waikiki, try to avoid the last week of April and the first week of May. Because of the Golden Week holidays in Japan, many Japanese tourists visit the islands during this time. If you are going to visit the Big Island, avoid Easter because of the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and October because of the Ironman Triathlon.
2. Decide which what activities you want to do while on vacation. If you want to see humpback whales, you should visit from November to March. If you would like to surf, visit during the winter months. The waves, even at the North Shore, are very small during the summer months.
3. Try to plan your visit during the off-season. One of the benefits of coming during the off-season is smaller crowds and reduced rates. The off-season in Hawaii is typically April through the middle of December. December to February is typically the business time in the Hawaiian Islands. Note that summers can sometimes become busy because of families visiting during summer vacations.
5. Consider the weather on the Hawaiian Islands. People often assume that it is either hot all year or that the temperatures are always moderate. The average temperature from November to April is 78 degrees F; From May to October, it is around 85 degrees F.
Tips
If you are planning on visiting during peak season and want to use frequent flier miles for you plane ticket, be sure to book your ticket well in advance. There are a limited number of frequent flier miles to Hawaii since it is a popular trip.
