What Is Adventure Cycling?

After our FemTour, we told some friends that we went on an adventure cycling trip, and their jaws dropped. They thought we were talking about something out of the X Games, with flips on the half pipe. The truth of the matter is that a guided adventure bike tour is far simpler, and much more accessible.

What is Included
As always, different companies offer differing packages, but the company that ran our FemTour offered a great deal for the price of your cycling tour. Not only did the price cover all lodging and most meals, but they also supplied van support for stragglers, maps, gratuities for restaurants, and excellent guides. Pretty much the only thing we had to worry about was our airline tickets to the tour's starting point.

As for lodging, some companies include camping every night, while others offer stays in inns or hotels. What we loved about our FemTour was that the guide led us to the most interesting spots for bed each night. This meant that we'd stay in everything from a cabin, to an intimate inn--whatever best typified the area through which we were riding.

Another aspect of our particular FemTour which we loved was the roommate situation. In order to save money, all rooms are double occupancy. Unless you request otherwise, the guide will pair you with a new roommate each night. Since there were three of us, we always rotated, with two of us sharing a room, and the third bunking with a roommate. This allowed us to get to know everyone on our tour, which we loved.
