In addition to the bountiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico, redfish can be found in Marco Island's "backcountry" as well as in and about the Florida Everglades. Despite their strength and notorious cunning, redfish fishing is popular with seasoned fishermen and first-time anglers alike.
The best place to find redfish is in the mouths of small bodies of water that empty into larger bodies of water. The reason for this is simple: food. Redfish are smart; they position themselves downstream from such openings in order to catch and eat smaller fish that come from open ocean waters.
In addition, you can also catch redfish in the shallow waters of canals, lakes, and marsh ponds for the same reason. The redfish diet consists largely of minnows and crabs that frequent such aquatic spaces. Should you be fortunate enough to catch a redfish, I recommend that you release it. After all, the joy of fishing is the catch. . .not the prize.
