Some people might assume that because of the size of Key West, it many be a bit slim in the area of restaurant selection. This is not an accurate assumption. The island actually has a good number and a good range of dining options.
The general "flavor" of Key West cuisine has a strong Cuban influence, which makes sense since Cuba is a mere 90 miles away. Another prominent influence on local cuisine is Caribbean food. Common ingredients in dishes are equally logical, in a geographical sense. Local specialties consist of a lot of fish and seafood, thanks to the plentiful waters surrounding the island. Tropical fruits are also common. Also common are tropical fruits and other common Caribbean and Cuban staples.
Dining that Is High-End, Low-End, and All around the Town
Your budget shouldn't be a concern regarding finding good dining in Key West. There are restaurants that run the gamut, from the very economical to the expensive. You also don't have to stick with the local cuisine, either. There are plenty of restaurants that feature good old American food, for families with picky eaters or those who relish the familiar tastes of home. There's even a Burger King for the financially strapped, non-health-conscious travelers.
There are really two things you can do to make deciding on restaurants a bit easier. First, you can have a look at a restaurant guide. Most comprehensive guides will include reviews of Key West eateries. Next, you can talk to the locals once you get there. Sometimes people who live in the area will be able give you better advice on local establishments than restaurant guides. They may also be able to recommend specific dishes at specific restaurants. Begin with the concierge in your hotel, motel, or resort.
