Isn't it funny how when you get to an island paradise, there are usually plenty of attractions, events, and areas to visit on the island? It's so easy to forget that one of the great things about visiting an island is what is around it--the water. If you're looking to visit Key West and you're anything but a landlubber, then you probably already know that there are any number of ways that you can enjoy Key West from a boat.
You can go on a sightseeing cruise or tour the back country and enjoy the tranquility of the two major wildlife refuges in the area. They are called the Great White Heron Refuge and the Key West National Wildlife Refuge. They are both open year round to visitors, but there is a catch. The islands are off limits and seaplane landings, personal watercraft, airboats, hovercraft, and waterskiing are not allowed.
Fishing and Snorkeling and Scuba Diving, Oh My!
You can participate in fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and more in the waters off of Key West. There are boats you can charter that will take you flats fishing, deep-sea fishing, and other types of fishing, too. You can learn to snorkel and even scuba dive.
You can also take a boat to visit Fort Jefferson on Dry Tortugas. You might also consider going parasailing or having an encounter with dolphins. You could go kayaking or do one of the many other boating-related activities available.
