Barracuda fishing is very popular in Florida. As someone who has spent most of my life in Florida, I can testify to the fact that barracuda fishing is as exhilarating as it is fun. All it takes is some good weather, calm waters, and the savvy of a knowledgeable fishing guide to make a day of barracuda fishing in Florida one that you will never forget.
Barracuda Fishing on Marco Island
Despite their infamous reputation, barracuda are some of the least sought-after-fish in the Florida fishing community. This is mostly due to the fact that barracuda are thought to be boring fish with nasty personalities that are too easy to catch. Let me assure you from experience that this isn't true. On my last deep-sea-fishing trip off of Marco Island, as a matter of fact, my friends and I had an amazing time catching (and releasing) glorious barracuda that proved to be very worthy opponents and displayed amazing runs and jumps.
Of course, fishing for barracuda and swimming with barracuda are two entirely different activities. In the Florida keys, for instance, where the waters are particularly clear and the snorkeling spectacular, water dwellers are warned against wearing anything shiny underwater (such as jewelry). The reason for this being that barracuda are particularly attracted to shiny objects and are not afraid to go after them. Although I personally have not been bitten by a barracuda, I know several people who have.
If you are planning a fishing trip to South Florida any time soon, I highly recommend that you stop by Marco Island for a little barracuda and/or amberjack fishing. Just make sure that if it gets too hot on the boat and you want to go for a dip in the ocean, you take off all your jewelry first. Otherwise the fish might confuse you for bait!
