Fiji Facts

Fiji is truly a unique place to visit and one that has natural beauty, great accessibility, all kinds of activities to enjoy and things to see. For years, people have been visiting (and relocating to) Fiji, but all and all, it has maintained its traditional rites and indigenous culture. The Islands are blessed with mild weather, crystalline blue lagoons, luxurious rainforests and pristine rivers. For the most part, Fiji's landscape is unchanged from years gone by. For the outdoor enthusiasts, it is an ideal place to go.

Geology of Fiji
The vast majority of the land mass in Fiji is volcanic in origin, with some reef-formed limestone and coastal sedimentary formations. The bigger Fiji Islands for the most part are mountainous. The western sides of the Viti Levu and Vanua Levu Islands are a little drier and are not as vegetated as the eastern ones.

The difference in the amount of rainfall between the western and eastern sides is actually striking. The eastern side of Viti Levu Island, where the capital city of Suva is located, averages about 300 cm in precipitation, whereas on the western side where the Nadi International Airport is located, averages about 165 cm.

The Fijian customs reflect utmost dignity and they always extend great courtesy toward visitors. You will find when visiting Fiji that there are ceremonies for just about every occasion, which in some instances include presentations to visitors of "tabua" (whales' teeth), food, gifts, and more commonly, the drinking of yaqona (kava), which is their national beverage. Most anyone who is visiting Fiji will be offered yaqona at some time or another. It is only polite and goes along with custom to graciously accept the `bilo' (cup) when offered by a host.
