The northern islands possess the Rainbow Reef; the most popular scuba diving in the Fiji Islands. This coral reef is exceedingly beautiful and easily accessible. Taveuni is ideal for tourist with several lovely National Parks, nice beach locations, abundant outdoor activities, excellent accommodations, good public transportation, many independent restaurants and shops and organized day tours.
East and West
The eastern islands basically only have places to stay. This area is accessible by boat or plane. Ovalau, a mountainous tropical island with the historical old capital, has budget hostels and guesthouses. Scuba diving here is good.
The western islands contain a compact collection of islands. There are many water activities available. The Yasawa group is a chain of small volcanic islands and a favorite for backpackers. The Mamanuca group is a good day trip destination.
