The Maya

Long before Belize became known as one of the world's most popular vacation destinations, the Maya Indians inhabited the islands in and about the area. Thousands of years after their demise, artifacts and ruins left behind indicate that the Mayans were an extraordinary people. From their spectacular advancements in architecture to their beautiful artwork, the Mayans left behind quite a legacy.

The Maya Ruins:
Deep within the jungles of Belize and Mexico as well as the limestone shelf of the Yucatan rest the majestic temples and fortresses of the Maya. The attention to detail as well as the remarkably strong architectural balance of these buildings is astounding to say the least. In addition to structural design, Mayans also developed the first (and only) native America writing system and were said to be "masters of mathematics and calendrics."

If you are planning a trip to Belize, I must insist that you participate in a Maya tour. There are dozens of ruins and excavated sites in and about the islands of Belize. For as little as $50 you can take a private tour of some of the world's oldest ghost towns and witness first hand the spectacular structures left behind by this astonishing civilization.

The Maya ruins are something that I believe everyone should visit at least once in a lifetime.
