No San Pedro vacation is complete, in my opinion, without a snorkel or dive trip to the famous Blue Hole. A circular reef area that is approximately 300 feet wide and 400 feet deep, the Blue Hole is positively awe-inspiring. As someone who has been diving for years, I believe a trip to the Blue Hole to be one of the most breathtaking. Equal parts beautiful, remarkable, humbling, and terrifying, diving Blue Hole is a life altering experience.
San Pedro Vacation Tips: Blue Hole
Just off the coast of San Pedro, Blue Hole is part of the Lighthouse Reef System. A perfectly round hole that drops 400 feet in depth, Blue Hole is unlike anything you have ever seen before in your life. Some of the most amazing features of Blue Hole are the intricate limestone formations and stalactites that decorate its walls. The deeper beneath the surface you go, the more complex and ornate these works of nature.
A trip to Blue Hole is typically reserved for more advanced divers. This is due to the fact it is a category decompression dive. Buoyancy control is an absolute must as mistakes 200 hundred feet beneath the surface can easily result in death. In addition, divers attempting Blue Hole must be in excellent physical and mental shape. Sunlight does not reach much of Blue Hole, which means that a great part of the more advanced dives takes place in the dark. In other words, a dive to Blue Hole can be terrifying and loosing control is not an option.
When it comes to diving Blue Hole, my advice to anyone interested is this: unless you are a truly experienced diver, stick with a shallow dive and or snorkeling the edge.
