In addition to its sparkling waters and white sand beaches, Belize is also known for its rich history and Mayan culture. In my experience, every trip to Belize is an education. Host to hundreds of ancient Mayan cities and ruins, Belize is a spiritual place with a great deal yet to be explored. In my opinion, a vacation to Belize that doesn't include some Mayan tours is almost a waste.
Mayan Culture and History:
Ancient ruins that haunt the islands of Belize tell us that the area was once the home of Maya Indians. A highly civilized group of individuals who were remarkably advanced in their architecture and craftsmanship, the Maya Indians were way ahead of their time. In addition to constructing vast cities and monuments (the ruins of which still stand to this day), Maya Indians also used advanced methods of farming and complex calendar systems.
Perhaps one of the most impressive Mayan sites in Belize is one known as Cuello. A site believed to date back as far as 2,500 B.C., Cuello offers a wealth of information about this ancient civilization and how they lived. From bowls, eating utensils and artwork (some of the oldest in the world), to ancient buildings, jewelry and gravesites, the artifacts available for viewing in and about Cuello are positively mind blowing.
The best way to experience true Mayan culture, in my opinion, is to tour some of these ancient sites.
