Barrier Reefs

The barrier reefs in and about Belize draw visitors from all over the world. Whether you are a first time diver, a lifelong snorkeler, or an avid underwater explorer, nothing can prepare you for the beauty of the Belize barrier reef. As someone who has visited Belize several times, I would like to take this opportunity to educate you on what I believe to be the area's most fascinating feature.

The Belize Barrier Reefs:
Protecting the Belize coastline from the often treacherous Caribbean waters is the barrier reef of Ambergris Caye. Stretching nearly 200 miles long, this reef is the largest in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest in the world. Divers and snorkelers alike can get lost for hours exploring this natural wonder. From the magnificent coral formations to the unique marine life that reside there, the Belize barrier reef is simply awesome to visit.

The thing I like most about the barrier reef in Belize is that it is accessible to divers and snorkelers like. Unlike many reefs in the world that can only be viewed up close at deeper depths, many parts of the Ambergris barrier reef rest in relatively shallow water. While touching and/or removing any part of the reef is strictly forbidden, there is nothing to stop interested visitors from swimming close for a better look.

The Barrier Reef in Belize is something that I believe all visitors should spend some time exploring.
