Uzes, located northwest of the port city of Marseille, is a small, quaint village perched overlooking the scenic Alzon River. Uzes is close to the Pont du Gard and is conveniently served daily by buses originating in nearby Nimes. Uzes is home to dozens of Renaissance and neoclassical houses and many are available to rent for family vacations.
The Pont du Gard is among the prime reasons why many tourists make the brief journey from the larger cities of Marseille and Aix en Provence to Nimes and Uzes. The Pont du Gard is actually an ancient Roman aqueduct that spans nearly 50 kilometers and crosses the Gard River. The aqueduct is considered by many to be one of the most masterful examples of ancient Roman architecture.
Uzes and Beyond
Only a short drive or bus ride from Uzes is the ancient capital city of Aix en Provence. Aix is well known for its classic, Provencal homes and bright French gardens. During the 15th century, Aix was the capital city of Provence and was home to many of the upper-crust of society, including wealthy merchants and dignitaries.
Today, these past riches can still be enjoyed in the stunning architecture, palatial mansions, and gorgeous city squares. The narrow shaded streets snake through the town and lead visitors to ancient fountains and hidden treasures. These unique, traditional features have made Aix an inspiration for writers and artists throughout history.
