Uzes France

Uzes, France reflects the relaxed pace of the citizens of the area. Uzes is representative of the Gard department in its neoclassical architecture, idyllic countryside, and scenic beauty. Also, from Uzes, there are bus lines that can quickly whisk you away to the bustling cities of Marseille, Aix en Provence, and Arles. There are plenty of things to do in Uzes--if you are an avid people-watcher, you can head over the Place des Herbes and see the town's inhabitants come and go, relaxing with a glass of wine in your hand. Or, if you enjoy cooking, you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and herbs at the bi-weekly farmer's markets.

Gard is a department of great contrasts with regards to landscape. There are fields of lavender and poppies, groves of olives, orchards, vineyards, and the mountain ranges that provide shelter from the Mistral winds. In nearby Bouches du Rhone, one can lose oneself in the Alpilles mountains. The Luberon nature park in the Alpilles is not as well-known as the towering Alps to the east but is truly a jewel in its own right. The view from the tops of these mountains reveals the deep green of forests below and the bright colors of the lavender plains.

Farther Afield
In the southwest of the Bouches du Rhone department is the junction of the Rhone and the Mediterranean Sea. Here you'll find a unique wetlands area that is home to rice paddies, ponds, and countless species of indigenous birds. The sight of Carmarque cowboys riding their white horses across a muddy marsh is an experience not soon forgotten.

Arles, the gateway to Camarque, is a city of distinct contrast to the rest of France. It almost retains an "outlaw" feel with bull fights, gypsies, and cowboys strolling down the city streets. In fact, the bull runs and bull fights are held in the very same arena that featured Roman games in the first century!
