Traveling around Europe by train is one of the easiest ways to explore most of the popular historic sites and attractions, maximize your time in each city, and travel across long distances without worrying about traffic or driving problems. Train stations are conveniently located at several key destinations around Europe, and purchasing a railpass allows you to board the Eurail with ease.
Step 1Check the fare schedule. Some train companies publish their fares online, while others offer their rates in a brochure from the ticketing office. Check the fare schedule and availability by contacting the station directly.
Step 2Purchase the right rail pass. Buying a single-country or multiple-country railpass can help you save as much as 50 percent off the standard price of train tickets. Sites such as Travel Cuts offer discount rail passes for countries across Europe (see Resources below).
Step 3Arrive at the station 10 to 15 minutes before departure. You may need longer to find the right platform, but you will have a better chance at obtaining good seats if you arrive early.
Step 4Board the train. Find a seat on the train and allow the ticket officer to mark or punch your ticket. This serves as a “stamp” for your trip and you will need to hold onto this ticket as proof of paying for your seat.
Step 5Store large bags in the overhead compartment. Duffel bags and smaller suitcases can be stored in overhead compartments and bins for safety. Some bags can be tucked under your seat.
Step 6Watch for indications of your next destination. Some trains feature a real-time map showing the next station while others will announce the next station over the radio system.
Step 7Pick up your baggage and depart the train. Prepare to depart the train when your station is announced. In most cases, you will depart the train from the doors opposite to wear you entered.
TipsTraveling by train can be more efficient than air travel or taking a cab. Eurail accommodations for overnight travel are comfortable, clean and give you a chance to take in the view of the European countryside. First-class train rides around Europe may serve food and beverages during the trip. Taking the Eurial also gives you a chance to socialize with other travelers or just relax.
WarningsSome European railways sytems require reservations, while others accept passengers at all times; call the station ahead of time to confirm the policy. If you obtain a quote from a rail transportation provider, make sure the final price is all-inclusive. Some cities require changing trains to get to your final destination; map out your route with the help of a train ticketing officer if you’re unsure if your city is a one-train destination.
