OverviewIn order to travel abroad, British nationals are required to carry an up-to-date passport. The passport is valid for a specified amount of time, and is not considered acceptable travel documentation after its expiration date. British nationals can renew their passport in person, online or by mail.
TypesCandidates for British passport renewals include British nationals living in the UK who wish to renew their passport in the UK, British nationals living overseas who wish to renew their passports during a visit to the UK, and British nationals living overseas who wish to renew their passport without returning to the UK.
Time FrameFor British nationals living and renewing their passports in the UK, the process is simple. British nationals can renew passports if they still have their last passport, which was issued as a standard adult or child passport, the passport is not damaged, and your name and status will remain unchanged. Standard applications process in approximately three weeks. For urgent British passport renewals, residents can call the 24-hour Passport Adviceline at (0300) 222 0000. Expedited passport renewal services include a one-week Fast Track service or a same-day Premium renewal.
ConsiderationsIf you are a British national living overseas, you can renew your passport without returning to the UK. Simply visit the nearest British embassy, high commission or consulate to apply. If you live overseas but wish to renew your passport while visiting the UK, you must appear in person to make an appointment with the Identity and Passport Service. In addition, you must give a UK address for shipment of the renewed British passport, and must be present to sign for the receipt of the passport when it arrives.
EffectsWith a renewed passport, British nationals are able to travel freely and legally abroad. The standard passport issuance is good for 10 years for an adult passport and 5 years for a child's passport. At the end of the period, you will be required to renew your passport once more.
WarningsBritish passport renewal will take additional time and may require additional forms if your original passport was issued for a restricted period of time or if you need to change your name. If your original passport status was as a child on a parent's passport, you will need to apply for an adult passport. Each of these situations requires specific forms and processes; check with the Identity and Passport Service for details.
