Montreal history is very rich. It gets its name from Jacques Cartier when he discovered this area. He saw the mountain that lies in this region and named it Mount Royal. This was all the way back in 1585; where centuries of history come to follow.
The first main settlers were French. They built a small colony on the island in the 1600s. It grew and grew as they staved of multiple natural disasters and shortcomings. In the 1700s, the French spent around 20 years building a wall around the city. It would fortify them to keep the people safe.
More Recent Montreal History
Recent Montreal history brings us the knowledge of what makes this city what it is. The early 1900s saw the creation of Montreal Stadium as well as the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Arts, music, festivals and celebration become the cornerstones of the people. While this is a major city with great modern attractions, the deep roots to living life freely still run through the streets.
In the 1960s, the subway began construction. Montreal was to be one of the largest and most technologically advanced cities in Canada. They now have are an international banking center and have some of the nicest buildings and hotels in North America. Montreal's history is much more detailed, but I hope you get the picture.
