San Diego, California is a vacationer's dream. The city has arguably America's best year-round climate, averaging 70° Fahrenheit, with over 300 average days of sunshine. Sitting 30 miles from the Mexican border and beside the Pacific Ocean, San Diego has everything that is good about California, with a little bit of Mexico and a lot of history thrown in. San Diego is a top business traveler's destination as well with many high tech, import/export and financial companies in the area.
Accommodations in San Diego tend to run higher in price than in most other parts of the country. I only can say three words about that: location, location, and location. San Diego not only is one of the most naturally beautiful communities in America, with its miles of breathtaking coastline, rolling hills, cliffs, and lagoons, but it has so many fantastic man-made attractions as well. From tony La Jolla to the historic Gas Lamp District to Old Town San Diego, the city's neighborhoods are each unique, diverse, and exciting.
Sea World made its debut in San Diego, and now has satellite locations all over the country. The San Diego Zoo is world renowned and home to hundreds of species from all seven continents. Championship golf courses dot every corner of the city, including the fantastic Torrey Pines Golf course sitting high on the cliffs above Black's Beach (a famous nude beach). The three S's are available year-round in San Diego: surfing, sun bathing, and sport fishing. Kids of all ages can have fun in the city.
Luxury Accommodations in San Diego
San Diego probably has more luxury hotels than any other city of its size. In the historic Gas Lamp District (south of downtown) stands the five-star rated Ramada Inn and Suites, which competes with hotels all over the world when it comes to luxury and service. La Jolla has some excellent luxury hotels including the Lodge at Torrey Pines, La Valencia in La Jolla Village, and the Grande Colonial. Hotel Del Coronado on Coronado Island is a historic favorite as well. Luxury accommodations in San Diego range from $150 to $600 a night, depending on the suite and time of year.
You may not know it, but full scale gambling is legal in certain parts of San Diego County. Sections of Indian reservations exist in the county and huge hotels and casinos have sprouted up in those areas. Like all hotel/casinos, the room rates are often discounted to get gamblers into the casinos. If you are interested in such an arrangement you can check into the Barron Valley Casino, a few miles inland from downtown San Diego.
Tijuana, Mexico is 30 miles south of downtown San Diego. Many travelers visit Tijuana for the day and come back. You can either take buses across the border, or park your car on the American side and walk across. No passport is needed, but you will need a valid U.S. identification card like a driver's license to get back across the border. Accommodations in motels close to the border tend to be less expensive, but the neighborhoods get rougher as well. For instance, you can get national chain motel rooms like Super 8 in places like Chula Vista (just north of the border) for $44 a night.
Save Money by Making Reservations Online
Reservation companies put together websites that benefit hotels and motels, restaurants, and shopping venues. Many of these websites don't charge a fee for the various establishments to advertise, but they do take a percentage of the rooms reserved through them. The top rated websites get discounts on room rates because they book so many rooms. For these reasons, it pays for you to book online rather than call a hotel directly, or walk in.
Hotel and motel reservation websites are set up so you can easily comparison shop. You can quickly see up-to-the-minute rates, lists of amenities, property information, and even color photos of rooms and facilities. You can get information about local dining, shopping, and entertainment possibilities on the same website. Competition in the lodging business is tough and national hotel chains as well as independents are offering more than ever before to get your business. Today, you can often get free airport shuttles, free breakfast buffets, free high speed Internet access, and more for one reasonable room rate. The most important thing is to do your research online.
