If you are planning on visiting the Los Angeles area and need lodging, keep in mind that the city is very spread out, and public transportation is spotty at best. There are many big hotels near LAX, in the downtown area, in Santa Monica, Hollywood, or the San Fernando Valley. If you have business downtown, you will probably want to stay in that area, and there are many options available.
Hotels and motels in Los Angeles range from roach-infested dumps to palatial estates. The amazing thing is that you may have to pay the same price for a dump as you would a nice two- or three-star rated chain hotel if you come unprepared. For instance, if you just walk into a hotel near LAX, you may pay as much as $150 for one night. If you book that same room in advance online you may pay only $60.
If you are visiting Los Angeles as a tourist, you may want to stay in Santa Monica, West Hollywood, or even Beverly Hills. Don't think just because you hear the name, Beverly Hills that you can't possibly afford to stay there. I have seen rooms in Beverly Hills advertised for as low as $120 a night for a four-star rated hotel. Of course, you could go all out and stay at the five-star rated Peninsula for a bit more.
