No tour of Maine would be complete without learning a little bit about Bar Harbor. Originally named "Eden" because it happened to be the name of an English statesman, it was renamed Bar Harbor in 1918. Its original name remains ironically apt, since surrounded by Acadia National Park, this little village is a vacation paradise for those who enjoy both the splendor of nature, and the glory of a small town community.
In and About Bar Harbor
Bar Harbor and the island of Mount Desert was originally founded by British Puritans. Considering the vast array of plant and animal life, it's no wonder they loved the land so. With fantastic fishing, a great wooded area and stunning rock formations, it is like a crossroads where all of nature meets in harmony.
It might not have become such a draw for visitors if not for the vision of artists like Thomas Cole and Frederic Church. Through paintings they gave Easterners a glimpse of what Bar Harbor is all about. From that inspiration, weary travellers flocked towards this seaside village, and in turn the village came to embrace its visitors.
Among the inspired visitors were other artists, starting a tradition that still thrives today in the little shops and studios of local artisans. Even they would tell you that the true artist here is the majestic ocean that carved and nourished this little island. Coming to know more about Bar Harbor is indeed a process of knowing more about the nature that has nourished and raised us all.
