In classic definition, an inn usually refers to a smaller dwelling which has less than 20 rooms, but more than six. Anything under six rooms would normally classify as a bed and breakfast. The definitions have blurred somewhat in recent years, as larger hotel establishments have tried to incorporate the smaller feel of a classic inn by providing amenities such as a full-service breakfast. The bottom line now is that you'll have to investigate an establishment's amenities rather than judging what they'll offer based on a name.
Smaller inns may not offer great amenities such as a pool or work-out room. In addition, smaller inns and bed and breakfasts can be more expensive than larger-scale motels. Your choice will depend on what you're looking for. For those staying more than a day or two, the pool and work-out room are really useful.
Choosing an Inn
There's also a marked difference in atmosphere between motels, hotels, and inns, even in Sedona. You have to choose what sort of environment you want ahead of time. Do you want a tech-savvy inn? Larger hotels will have cable TV--some will have a VCR. Some bed and breakfasts do not include TV at all, so this may be a consideration. Many inns are realizing that customers need internet access, and will often advertise their services. It's possible to get free high speed connections in each room, and wireless internet in some areas, too. Even if you don't use it, it's nice to have the option.
You'll probably also want concierge service. The concierge at larger hotels can help make reservations or point travelers towards interesting destinations. This is like having a tour guide at the front desk. In addition, larger inns or hotels may have package deals so you can save money on a room as well as attractions.
