Most activities in Sedona revolve around the amazing natural setting. When you think about Arizona, you'll think of the desert first--vast plains of cacti and tumbleweeds. Sedona is a lot more varied than that. Certainly, you'll see plenty of cactus, but some trails can seem downright mountainous. If you walk on the edge of a stream, with the trees around you, it hardly feels like the desert at all.
This means that you shouldn't necessarily stop after one visit to a park. There are a number of parks to choose from and they are all unique. There's the Coconino National Forest, which has a number of scenic hiking trails. There's the Slide Rocks State Park, for swimming and rock water-sliding. Finally, there's Red Rock State Park.
You can think of all these places as natural amusement parks. If you really want to get to know Sedona, you shouldn't stop with a visit to one park. Slide Rocks State Park can sometimes be crowded as well, so you might take a trip to the Coconino Forest to escape the crowds--this is especially true during peak season.
Visit Montezuma's Castle for a Glimpse of History
One of the most amazing sites you'll see in Arizona is Montezuma's Castle. This is a rock cliff dwelling with 20 rooms, which was once home to a Native American tribe called the Sinagua--600 years ago. It's one of the best examples of its kind, and awe-inspiring to believe that people actually lived that way on the edge of a cliff. Ask your hotel front desk clerk for directions, because this one shouldn't be missed.
