Before you begin your Kodiak bear hunting excursion, there are a few things you should know about these animals. Kodiaks are the largest bears in the world! They stand at over 10 feet tall, and they are 5 feet tall when standing on all four legs. Hard to believe these 1,500 pound bears were less than a pound at birth.
Currently, there are approximately 3,000 Kodiak bears per square mile in the state of Alaska. Kodiaks live on the Kodiak Archipelago Islands, isolated from other bear species. Kodiak bears are happy, healthy, and have developed their own language and social structure. They have lived in isolation from other bear species for over 12,000 years!
Kodiak Bear Hunting Season
Kodiak bears retreat to their dens in late October, and re-emerge in mid-to-late June. It is a mystery how these bears can sleep for 8 months without eating, drinking or urinating. When they awake, Kodiak bears have lost little to no bone mass or muscle tone.
This eight-month hibernation leaves little room for Kodiak bear hunting. Kodiak bear hunting season runs throughout May and June. In addition to obtaining a big game hunting license, nonresidents are required to use a professional guide when Kodiak bear hunting. These guides cost $10,000-$14,000 per hunt.
