Johnstone Strait

Johnstone Strait is located on the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, is home to one of the largest resident Orca (killer whale) populations in the world. Each year the Orcas return to the area to feed on the abundant supply of salmon, and from the comfort of a kayak, Orca viewing is an unforgettable experience. The Johnstone Strait is a great place to start kayaking if whale watching an adventure you are interested in taking.

In addition to the thrill of kayaking with the Orcas, Humpback and Minke whales, the Johnstone Strait is also home to a huge variety of other marine mammals including sea lions, porpoises, bear, and river otters . Each summer Johnstone Strait welcomes the return of the orcas as they come to feed on the abundant salmon, however days can also be spent discovering the waterways and cluster of islands surrounding the strait.

The Johnstone Strait offers much more than orcas, just remember the region is widely known for their unique blend of rich cultural and natural history. In the coves and scenic mountainous areas that are located on the islands that surround the strait there are cultural artifacts left by a native artist of long ago. So spend a day exploring the land surrounding the strait on an enjoyable day hike into the wilderness.

But don't be fooled, this specific area is best know for Orca watching so grab your water proof camera and extra socks and head out on the adventure of a lifetime. If you are lucky you may also spot minke whales, river otters, harbour porpoises, black bear, deer, and a wide variety of birdlife.
