Ecuador volcanoes are one of the main attractions of this beautiful country, and for many reasons. Ecuador's mountain ranges feature the "Big Ten", which are ten of the largest and most notorious volcanoes known to man. Rising to extreme altitudes of over 5000 meters, travelers are encouraged to spend a few days acclimating themselves to the unique climate and air quality at such heights on their way to the summit.
The different Ecuador volcanoes each offer very different adventure experiences, which should be considered along with the skill of the hiker in question. Cotopaxi is probably the most popular mountain, since one can drive more than halfway up the mountain side and camp easily near the top. These make reaching the summit at an agreeable time an easy task, and a fun journey for those who like minimal direction from their guides.
Ecuador Volcanoes of Greater Height and Challenge
Other volcanoes belong belonging to the exclusive "Big Ten" are decidedly more difficult, for various reasons. Cayambe, for example, is not recommended for climbing at all, due to the continuous dense cloud cover. Even though it's not as tall as some of the other Ecuador volcanoes, the reduced visibility can lead hikers into crevasses, and other deadly pitfalls.
Chimborazo, on the other hand, can be hiked, even though it is the highest volcano in the planet. Many call it "The Summit Where The Earth Meets The Sky", since its altitude is so high and since it lies directly over the Equator. This volcano has a peak of over 6,300 meters, and though it is available for climbing, only experts should attempt to reach its treacherous peaks.
